Mecca
One of the largest unincorporated communities in the Fourth District with a population of approximately 9,000, Mecca is a completely unique town with a distinct flavor of Mexico. Named after the ancient Saudi Arabian holy city following a trip to the Mideast by a group studying the date industry, the South-Valley community is also famous for being a rallying point for the late UFW farm worker organizer Caesar Chavez. The County of Riverside has recently embarked on an ambitious $15 million downtown renovation plan which is designed to plan for the future and at the same time honor Mecca’s colorful past.
