Backyard Composting Workshop (Blythe)- February 25 10 a.m.

Download Flyer

The Riverside County Waste Management Department is offering a free “how-to” backyard composting workshop at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 in Blythe at Todd Park, 445 North Broadway.

Attend this “how-to” workshop to learn how to recycle organic resources such as yard trimmings, fruit and vegetable waste into a dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling soil conditioner. Compost can be used to enrich the soil in gardens, lawns and house plants.  Instead of putting organic waste in the garbage to be hauled to the landfill, learn to compost!

Composting is nature’s way of recycling. It’s a great way to divert waste from the landfill and turn it into a beneficial soil amendment.  In composting, organic material is mixed together in a pile or bin, where literally millions of tiny microbes digest the material and turn it into a nutrient-rich soil amendment.

Volunteer master composters will explain how to create compost easily and efficiently from organic wastes.  Low-cost compost bins will also be available for purchase by Riverside County residents (limit three per household).

For more information, contact Riverside County Waste Management Department at 951-486-3200 or visit www.rivcowm.org.

Thermal Fire Station Grand Opening- February 29 11 a.m.

The new Thermal Fire Station #39, located on Polk Street, will be dedicated at a grand opening at 11 a.m. February 29.  This station replaces the old Thermal Fire Station #39, built in the 1950s, which was located at 56-925 Vic Higgins St.

The 8,900 square-foot facility includes three brand new bays and seven individual rooms for boarding, with the capability to house a “crash truck” for the neighboring Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport.

In addition to better serving residents and creating 150-175 construction jobs, this facility will create the framework for the airport’s future expansion.  As part of the project, a local access road to the airport, “58th Street,” will be constructed off Polk Street.  The new road, water, sewer and electrical lines created for this project will act as catalysts for further development in the Thermal area.

The total project cost an estimated $4.2 million with $3 million from the Development Impact Fees (DIF) – Fire Facilities Fund and just over $1.1 million from Riverside County Redevelopment Funds.
