Every year, the County of Riverside and the Coachella Valley’s nine cities each select a senior citizen 70 years of age and older who demonstrates a zest for physical and mental well-being through volunteerism and active engagement in the community. The Senior Inspiration Awards lunch is a beloved tradition that was established by former Supervisor Corky Larson in 1992 as a way to recognize Coachella Valley’s role models. The tradition has continued with Supervisor Roy Wilson and Supervisor John J. Benoit.
The 2013 Senior Inspiration Awards, held on April 12, 2013 at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa, marked the event’s 21st year. Eleven extraordinary seniors were honored before a sold-out crowd of more than 570 people that included Corky Larson, Sheriff Stan Sniff, Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder Larry Ward and many public officials and dignitaries across the Coachella Valley.

The event is planned by the Senior Inspiration Awards committee, consisting of representatives of the nine cities, the Office on Aging, the Riverside County Foundation on Aging and Noel Loughrin from Supervisor Benoit’s office. Palm Desert Councilwoman Jean Benson chaired the Senior Inspiration Awards committee for the first 16 years, followed by Indian Wells Councilman Larry Spicer in 2011 and 2012. Palm Desert Mayor Jan Harnik chaired the 2013 event.
Attendees leave the lunch inspired by the accomplishments and optimism of the honorees. The Coachella Valley is fortunate to have a senior population that is so active in our community.
