Blythe Recycling Facility Ordered to Clean Up Immediately

BLYTHE - Not without a permit, you don't.

That's the message of the County of Riverside Code Enforcement Department to a firm using South Broadway property as a "recycling" facility.

The un-permitted facility, located at 1460 South Broadway, is being cleaned up because of enforcement action by the County department.

"We won't allow un-permitted facilities to be created in county territory," said Mike O'Connor, Deputy Director of the Code Enforcement Department. "We want this situation cleaned up as fast as it was created."

The roughly seven acre facility, located just south of the Blythe City Limits, recently appeared and was first reported to County Code Enforcement on August 2, 2007. After investigation, four "Notice of Violations" were issued on August 6.

The property owner, Western Land and Farming LLC, and the facility operator, Mission Fiber, have committed to having the offending material removed from the site.

Because of the volume of the material, Code Enforcement is aggressively seeking compliance. Code Enforcement Officers conducted a follow-up to the site and verified that the material was being removed on August 15.

Follow-up visits by Code Enforcement Officials will be occurring regularly until all the material is completely removed. The Department anticipates that the site will be cleaned by the end of October. In the meantime, the property has been fenced to reduce wind damage and two 12,000 gallon water tanks have been brought to the site for dust and fire protection.

"County Code Officials have had an open line of communication with the City of Blythe on this matter," said O'Connor. "Because the site is near the City's southerly border, Code Enforcement has been sensitive to the City's concerns."
