TRASHBUSTERS Back in Action this October 6 Volunteers Needed for Hard Work and Good Fun

COACHELLA VALLEY - They're back. The Southern Coachella Valley Community Service District "Trashbusters" will be hard at work Saturday, October 6, sprucing up the communities of Mecca, Thermal Oasis and Vista Santa Rosa.

Who are these people? Well, you, for one. That is, if you want to volunteer and get together with your neighbors to help make the southern valley a more beautiful place. Community groups, individuals, families, service organizations and youth groups are all encouraged to participate in this cleanup of the four communities.

In addition to the trucks which patrol the area for illegally dumped trash, the Community Services District will also have two community dumpsites where residents can dispose of their hard-to-get-rid-of items including old couches, mattresses, appliances and the like. This service is only available to residents of Mecca, Thermal, Oasis and Vista Santa Rosa. The community dumpsites will be located at the corner of 4th and Hammond in Mecca, and at the "TOM" site on Avenue 63 and Highway 111 in Mecca.

"If you or your group would like to participate in the Community Clean-up day, give us a call," says CSD General Manager Glenn Crowson. "You do the hard work, and we'll provide the free Trashbusters T-shirts, gloves, free lunch, music and good times.

"Please wear comfortable and safe working shoes—and that means no sandals or flip-flops." he said.

Volunteers will meet at the Rummonds Center in Thermal, or at the Community Center in Mecca at 7:30 a.m. The program ends at noon with a barbecue at the Fire station in Mecca. Only those participating in the Cleanup Program will be given shirts and lunch.

Sponsors of the event include the Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District, Supervisor Roy Wilson, Burrtec Waste Industries, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department and the County Waste Management Department.

A highlight of this year's event is the appearance of the "TOM" mascot. TOM is basically, er, a trash can. But he's no ordinary trash can, and you'll just have to show up to see how truly extraordinary a member of his species can be. Why do they call him "TOM"? It stands for Thermal, Oasis and Mecca. Why isn't Vista Santa Rosa included in his name? Well, have you ever known a trash can named TOMVSR? We rest our case.
