Youth Advisory Council Selects Slate of Officers
Fourth District - The growing ranks of the Fourth District Youth Advisory Council have selected a slate of officers to guide them in the 07/08 school year.
The Youth Advisory Council, which provides advice to Supervisor Roy Wilson primarily on matters concerning, well, youth, is comprised of students from high schools throughout Wilson's sprawling desert district.
"Our attendance is way up this year," says Noel Loughrin, Youth Advisory Council Coordinator. “ Some of that is through the increased participation of Palo Verde Valley students. In fact, nearly half of our members are from the Blythe area this year."
Supervisor Wilson's District stretches from Palm Springs to the Arizona border, and each year the high school students band together to form the 4th District Youth Advisory Council. The YAC then elects a slate of five officers, one of whom represents the Fourth District on the countywide Youth Commission. There are also two alternates Commission reps.
This year's Fourth District officers include: Commissioner James Nelson, Desert Christian High School; Co-Commissioner Anthony Ceballos, Cathedral City High School; and Youth Summit Representative Alexa Bleecker, Palm Springs High School. Palo Verde High's Brianna Jakell will serve as Secretary and her fellow Yellow Jacket Cassidy McKinney is Parliamentarian.
"I'm extremely pleased that membership is up this year," says Loughrin. “And we expect our numbers to grow even more."
Each year, the Youth Advisory Council takes on a variety of community projects, this year focusing on service projects aiding senior citizens. Homelessness is another issue the YAC will concentrate on, as is substance abuse.
