"YAC" Members Ramping Up Fall Volunteer Campaign

A group of teenagers are volunteering their time this Saturday and over the next couple months to benefit others.

The Fourth District Youth Advisory Council is comprised of high school students from the Coachella and Palo Verde Valleys, and they will be participating in the "Walk for a Cure" event this Saturday at Todd Park in Blythe. The will assist the event in a volunteer role, passing out bottled water and information regarding cancer.

"Its exciting that we have so much participation from the Palo Verde Valley this year," said Noel Loughrin, YAC Coordinator and legislative intern for Fourth District Supervisor Roy Wilson. "The two groups of kids intermingle really well, and they really are committed to performing valuable community service this year."

In the upcoming few months, the YAC kids will also stage a number of events in the District to benefit the homeless and the hungry.

Trick or Treating for canned goods is the first event the YAC students will handle. They'll go door to door collecting non-perishable items, rather than candy, and they'll be doing this in a variety of communities here in the desert.

Next up, on the day before Thanksgiving, the YAC volunteers will head for the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission to help out with the preparation of Thanksgiving Dinner.

On Tuesday, December 4, they'll participate in the County's "Project Homeless Connect" by putting together toiletries to hand out to the homeless at Martha's Village in Indio.

The Fourth District Youth Advisory Council is comprised of student volunteers who advise Supervisor Wilson on a variety of youth-related issues. Each year, the YAC takes on a number of volunteer projects to help the less fortunate in the District. The Fourth District YAC also has representation on the county-wide Youth Advisory Commission.
