Enjoy Thanksgiving, but Be Forewarned About the Chips
The California Highway Patrol Indio Station is preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday, but officers aren't defrosting turkey or making pumpkin pies.
According to CHP Commander Captain Sherrell Sutherland, a big holiday dinner is not a part of most officers' plans.
"Starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21 through midnight Sunday, we will be implementing a Maximum Enforcement Period," Captain Sutherland said. "During this time, every available officer will be on the road to assure motorists a safe trip and a happy holiday."
As usual, the highway patrol will be focusing on major safety issues such as seat belt use, speeding and driving under the influence.
Last year, 21 drivers were arrested locally by the CHP for drunk driving during the holiday period. Media Relations Officer Tami Low says that statistic does not include arrests by local police departments.
