Rivco Board, EDA, Move Mecca Plan Forward

Another piece of the puzzle has been placed in the County of Riverside plan for revitalizing “ downtown” Mecca.

The County Board of Supervisors Tuesday unanimously approved purchase of two key downtown properties for $398,000. The relocation of residents who live on the property and the miscellaneous costs for acquisition of the two key pieces of land, on the corner of Brown and 2nd Streets brings the total cost to $488,000.

The approval by the Board successfully paves the way toward a multi-million dollar Mecca downtown revitalization effort by the County of Riverside, which includes:

  • The already-completed Mecca Family and Farm Worker Service Center
  • New sheriff’s substation and library, to open soon
  • Road improvements and new curbs, gutters and sidewalks
  • New entryways into community, with monument signs and improved circulation
  • New Boys & Girls Club
  • New fire station

The County’s long-distance vision for these improvements includes encouragement for the private sector to invest in Mecca, thereby further improving the community. By the way, all of these improvements are being made with input from the residents of Mecca, and with an eye on preserving the historic roots of the community.
