Board of Supervisors to Honor Emergency Operations
The Riverside County Board of Supervisors is presenting a proclamation today (Tuesday) to retiring Mary Moreland, County Office of Emergency Services Deputy Director.
The proclamation for outstanding service comes on the eve of her retirement on December 31.
“She is a consummate professional who has given the County of Riverside 18 years of superior service in assignments with both County Fire/County OES and with former District III Supervisor Jim Venable,” said Cal Fire/County Fire Chief John Hawkins. "There are many Mary Moreland success stories, including disaster preparation, response and recovery and grant administration.
“Many of the financial grants obtained for Riverside County were as a result of the actions of Mary Moreland.”
Among her accomplishments: She provided first line of emergency advice and consultation to County Executive Officer Larry Parrish, established Citizen Emergency Response Training (CERT) classes countywide, and initiated and managed several state and federal emergency declarations.
The retiring Deputy Director also presided over October 2007 Fire Siege evacuation housing, planning and town hall meetings, the September 2006 Katrina refugee housing effort in Riverside County, and managed many state and federal grants which have brought millions of dollars into Riverside County.
“It is not easy to fully state the impact that Mary Moreland has had on the quality of life and safety of the constituents of Riverside County,” said Fourth District Supervisor Roy Wilson. “ Suffice it to say that many, many people who don’t even know her name or her face have benefitted from her expertise and her diligence.
“We’ll miss her.”
Mrs. Moreland retires to spend more time with family and to enjoy retirement life with her husband, Mike, a retired Riverside County Sheriff’s Captain, and her new grandson.
“I am proud that I know Mary Moreland,” Chief Hawkins said. “We can only hope that Mary agrees to do some part time work for the Fire Department.”
