Grand opening ceremonies were held on Wednesday for the new SafeHouse of the Desert facility in Thousand Palms. Safehouse of the Desert, modeled on the successful Riverside Safehouse operation, is a program designed to take on runaway and "throwaway" youths. It gives them a safe place to live while their individual crisis is resolved. Among the many dignitaries present for the ceremony: many donors, Supervisor Roy Wilson, Sheriff Stan Sniff, District Attorney Rod Pacheco, State Senator Jim Battin, Safehouse Executive Director Kathy McAdara, Board members of Safehouse, and other elected officials.

The County of Riverside Code Enforcement Department's fourth community meeting held in November at the Mecca Elementary School attracted more than 90 residents. Code Enforcement Staff presented information on improving the Community, being good neighbors, and keeping your property "violation free." In addition to Code Enforcement handouts, balloons and refreshments, staff "partners" were available to answer questions and provide educational material. These partners included; Building and Safety, Economic Development Agency, Fire Department, Sheriff Department, Animal Services, and Environmental Health."
