Fourth District Youth to Get a Feel for County Government

Supervisor Roy Wilson’s Fourth District Youth Advisory Council (YAC) will join Riverside County staff to share a day on the job known as “Youth in Government Day”. This event will be held this Wednesday, January 16.

Youth in Government Day will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Workforce Development Center’s located at 44-199 Monroe Street, Indio. Supervisor Wilson will provide opening remarks, then Riverside County staff will be matched with a high school student. Adult mentors will be allotted six hours to share the various aspects of their jobs with the students. At approximately 3:00 p.m., all mentors and YAC members will reconvene for closing remarks.

For nine years now, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors has supported and participated in Youth in Government Day, organized by the Youth Commission. The Riverside County Youth Commission was established so that the Board of Supervisors could have direct contact with the youth of their respective districts. These students serve in an advisory role to the supervisors on youth-related issues.

The Youth Commission created Youth In Government Day in order for their members to gain a better understanding of how county government operates. Mentoring activities allow youth a hands-on approach to understanding the various aspects of the Riverside County. All departments are invited to participate. This year county employees from the Board of Supervisors, Sheriff’s and Districts Attorney’s offices, as well as the Probation and Fire Departments and the Economic Development will participate.

“Our YAC members look forward to this event every year because they get the opportunity to learn the various jobs in county government,” says Noel Loughrin, Fourth District YAC Coordinator. “We match students with mentors, based on the students’ interest in the occupation, and in the past this program has impacted our student’s decision on college majors and future careers.”
