County Crews Getting Ready for Weekend Deluge

It may be the beginning of the weekend, but County fire crews are not preparing to have a relaxing couple of days off.

And, while rainfall amounts here in the Fourth District are of course expected to be significantly less than they will be in the western end of the County, firefighters are battening down the hatches in the desert as well.

Swift water rescue teams have been honing their skills in advance of what forecasters predict may be the wettest couple of days in Southern California in the past few years. Rainfall amounts in some areas may total what typically is received in an entire season, and undoubtedly some washes here in the desert will be filled.

County officials warn motorists to not cross flooded streets and intersections, especially when they are posted as closed. In addition to the dangers of loss of life, motorists who ignore such signs are subject to arrest.

As wet as it's going to be here in the desert, the rest of the county will be wetter. Forecasters say that as much as 5 inches of rain could fall in some areas in the next 48 hours.

Empty sandbags are available at local fire stations as long as supplies last.

The executive summary: this is going to be a very good weekend to stay at home.
