Mecca Library and Sheriff's Substation Opens Tomorrow

The latest upgrade to the changing face of downtown Mecca receives its official grand opening ceremony tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 9).

The $5.2 million, 11,000 square foot facility on Avenue 66 will be home to the Mecca Library and Sheriff’s substation, with offices for the Code Enforcement Department and the Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District.

The new building will also have a satellite office for Fourth District Supervisor Wilson, as well as a community room for public forums and community events.

The new facility is directly across the street from the Mecca Family & Farm Worker Service Center. The two new structures are designed to not only give the downtown area a facelift, they’re designed to respect the history and culture of Mecca.

“Supervisor Roy Wilson identified the new center as a priority community development need in Mecca, and it was funded through the Riverside County Redevelopment Agency,” said Robin Zimpfer, Assistant County Executive Officer/Economic Development Agency.

“In addition to the new building, the project features parking facilities, lighting, and desert/drought tolerant landscaping features,” she said.

Featured speakers for the event are Riverside County Sheriff Stanley Sniff Jr., Supervisor Wilson, Riverside County Librarian Nancy Johnson and Deanna Lorson, Managing Director of the County Economic Development Agency.

Tours, refreshments, and entertainment are also offered, and the public is welcome. The new center is located at 91260 Avenue 66.

The festivities get under way at noon.
