Youth in Government Day Comes to Blythe (POSTPONED)
Supervisor Roy Wilson's Fourth District Youth Advisory Council (YAC) will join Riverside County staff in Blythe to share a day on the job known as "Youth in Government Day." This event will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
Youth in Government Day will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the County Administrative Center in Blythe located at 260 N. Broadway. Riverside County staff will be matched with a high school student and they will be allotted six hours to share the various aspects of their jobs with the students. At approximately 3:00 p.m., all mentors and YAC members will reconvene for closing remarks.
For nine years now, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors has supported and participated in Youth in Government Day organized by the Youth Commission. The Riverside County Youth Commission was established so that the Board of Supervisors could have direct contact with the youth of their respective districts. These students serve in an advisory role to the supervisors on youth-related issues.
The Youth Commission created Youth in Government Day in order for their members to gain a better understanding of how county government operates. Mentoring activities allow youth a hands-on approach to understanding the various aspects of the Riverside County. All departments are invited to participate. This year county employees from the Board of Supervisors, Sheriff's and Districts Attorney's offices, as well as the Probation and Fire Departments and the Economic Development will participate.
"I am so excited, for the first time we are having a Youth in Government Day in Blythe" says Noel Loughrin, Fourth District YAC Coordinator. "The YAC members in Blythe are so eager to learn about the different jobs that the county has to offer."
