Highway 111 Open . . . Sort of

The woes on Highway 111 east of Mecca continue after the train derailment of last week. The problem is the removal of tons of contaminated soil, which is taking somewhat longer than expected. The removal requires the intense use of heavy trucks, and the combination of the trucks and potential exposure to the contaminants is a worry to those managing the clean-up.

While the highway has been open for some time, it’s expected to be closed again mid-day, as the removal work starts up again (the disposal site in Arizona was closed on Sunday, so work halted).

This on-again, off-again status of 111 may continue for the next few days. At any rate, the detour east on Avenue 66, south on Garfield and then east again on Avenue 70 is well-marked.
