Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22, and TOM is Ready

TOM the trash can

In observance of Earth Day, the Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District is printing out a coloring book, featuring TOM the trash can . . . and aimed at getting kids to be aware of the need to responsibly dispose of trash.

The coloring book urges kids to start a community cleanup day, to recycle trash, and to properly dispose of household hazardous wastes. One of the goals of the coloring book is to entice kids into passing that message on to adults, who might not otherwise be sensitive to the need to dispose of trash in an environmentally sensitive manner.

The coloring book is expected to be ready in time for distribution to east valley elementary schools (those within the boundaries of the C.S.D.) prior to Earth Day.

The 11-page coloring book urges its young readers to report illegal dumping (888 782-6263) and to report graffiti on the Graffiti Hotline (888 472-3488).

The Southern Coachella Valley C.S.D. covers the communities of Thermal, Oasis and Mecca (thus, TOM’s nickname) as well as Vista Santa Rosa and North Shore.

Fourth District Supervisor Roy Wilson has been a strong supporter of the SCVCSD’s efforts to clean up illegal trash and graffiti in the eastern Coachella Valley.
