Thousand Palms to Host Cathedral City Contingent

There's a 4,100-acre parcel of land on the north side of Interstate 10 that has caught the eye of the City of Cathedral City. But it's no stretch to say that they while they may be eyeing it, they're not seeing eye to eye with the unincorporated community of Thousand Palms.

The subject land lies between Rio Del Sol Road and Da Vall, and the "Sphere of Influence" that the City plans to ask the Local Agency Formation Commission to approve intrudes upon Thousand Palms boundaries established by the Board of Supervisors back in 1990.

That's not something the community of Thousand Palms will take lightly. However, in an attempt to understand each other better, the City of Cathedral City has asked to be placed on the next Thousand Palms Community Council agenda, and the Council has complied with that request.

The City and the unincorporated community will grapple with the issue on Thursday, April 24 at the Thousand Palms Community Council meeting. That meeting gets under way at 6:15 p.m. at the Thousand Palms Community Center on the north end of Robert Road.

The Local Agency Formation Commission will make the ultimate decision on Cathedral City's request; how much opposition the Commission will be looking at remains to be seen. However, Supervisor Roy Wilson, who oversees the Thousand Palms Council, normally supports the position of a community council in such matters. A formal request has not yet been submitted by the City to LAFCO.

The public is invited to attend the Thousand Palms Community Council, which meets on the last Thursday of each month. Here's a map to the meeting location: Map.
