Latest Fugitive Wanted for Attempted Murder, Robbery

The latest fugitive placed on the Riverside County Most Wanted List is 27-year-old Jose "Gumby" Tovar of Desert Hot Springs.

According to investigators, Tovar "and a crime partner" approached a man walking in a Thousand Palms neighborhood and robbed him of his wallet and jewelry while Tovar held a gun to the side of the man's head. While police were investigating that crime, a second victim reported that he had also been robbed.

"Hours later, Tovar and his crime partner opened fire on a tattoo parlor manager in Cathedral City," says a news release from the District Attorney's office. "The victim was hit but survived the shooting."

Authorities believe that Tovar and his "crime partner" are members of a Desert Hot Springs gang that is a rival of a Cathedral City gang. They believe that the shooting may have been a result of gang rivalry.

Prosecutors want to charge Tovar with armed robbery and attempted murder in connection with these January 13, 2004 crimes

If anyone comes into contact with Tovar or has information on his whereabouts they are encouraged to call CRIME STOPPERS at (760) 341-STOP.
