4th District Community Clean Up Days Scheduled
Community Clean Up days for the remainder of 2008 and 2009 have been scheduled by Riverside County Code Enforcement Department, Burrtec Waste and Recycling Services and the Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District (SCVCSD). Palm Springs Explorers Bring Home the Bronze
Six Explorer scouts from the Palm Springs Police Department, competing in Las Vegas last weekend against 600 explorers from 43 police departments, emerged with a third place trophy in the Crime Scene Investigation category.

Free Screening of “The Women” in Palm Desert
On Wednesday, June 25th the Palm Springs International Film Society will present the next film in the “Drama Queens” series of free public screenings - George Cukor’s classic film “The Women”, starring Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell.
Groundbreaking on the new Indio Hills Community Center took place on Tuesday, and many local residents and officials braved the afternoon heat to participate in the festivities. The long-anticipated groundbreaking for the Thousand Palms Fire Station occurred today, Friday, June 13. Among the officials present for the event were Fourth District Supervisor Roy Wilson, Economic Development Agency Managing Director Deanna Lorson, College of the Desert Board Members Becky Broughton, John Marman and Charles Hayden, Jr. Also delivering remarks and praising the cooperative effort of the County and COD was County Fire Chief John Hawkins. Construction on an expansion of Fred Waring Drive began this week, on the section between Port Maria and Adams. These "interim" improvements will allow two lanes in each direction in that bottleneck section. County Transportation crews expect the work to be completed by early next week. A permanent solution, expanding the thoroughfare to six lanes, is still in the planning stages. Also, the remaining one lane piece of Fred Waring just east of Washington Street, is expected to be expanded to six lanes in the not-too-distant future.

If you haven't been to the General Patton Memorial Museum at Chiriaco Summit lately, you're in for a pleasant surprise the next time you visit. Combining resources, Supervisor Roy Wilson and the Desert Alliance for Community Empowerment came up with almost $48,000 for a new parking lot. The old lot was unsightly and breaking apart. The non-profit museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts from General Patton's Desert Training Center, as well as mementos donated to the museum, largely by veterans. Several groups were busy helping pitch in to make Thousand Palms a cleaner community last Saturday. Another 23 tons was collected curbside in the various Thousand Palms neighborhoods.
