Thousand Palms Does Some Late Spring Cleaning

Thousand Palms Cleanup

Cleaner yards, cleaner streets and happier residents.

That's the result of removing approximately 40 tons of waste from garages, yards and vacant lots during last Saturday's Thousand Palms Cleanup.

More than 70 curbside pickups yielded nearly 23 tons of trash, and approximately 130 "deliveries" at the collection site on Robert Road yielded almost 17 tons.

Community Council Member Karen Esposito thanked the volunteers from the Faith Community Church for their work on the main corridor of town" Ramon Road between Varner and Monterey.

The Sheriff's Department pitched in by having the Explorers team setting up traffic up cones. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Tim McManus helped by grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for all the people who made this clean up possible.

The community really came together because of the contributions of the local businesses. Costco donated all the supplies for the barbecue, including condiments and water. Sam's Club donated the meats and buns for the hamburger and hot dogs. Casa De Pasta Donated a free dinner for 2. Carl's Jr donated 16 free famous star hamburger certificates, Del Taco donated 57 Free Kid's Meal certificates, Domino's Pizza donated 5 large pizza certificates, and Taqueria San Miguel donated 3 $15 gift certificates. And that's not all: Classic Party Rentals donated tables and chairs and installed a canopy. Rodarte Ice Distribution donated ice for all the beverages.

The Special Enforcement Team patrolled the area and stayed afterwards to ensure that there was no illegal dumping activity. Code Enforcement checked residents in and gave out information as well as answered any Code related questions. Burrtec was vital and always more than willing to help.

"One resident stopped to see if we could help her," explained Betty Sanchez, Community Improvement Specialist with the Code Enforcement Department. "She had bought new appliances and wanted to get rid of her old ones but didn't know how to unhook them."

"I asked Burrtec supervisor Roy Villareal and he said 'no problem. We will have to men in a pick up follow you and we'll take care of it.'

"She was so grateful. This is just another way on how these clean-ups benefit the community."
