Abandoned Mare and Foal up for Adoption

An abandoned horse recovered by Riverside County Animal Services gave birth today.

Animal control officers with the Department of Animal Services retrieved the horse near the Santa Ana River in the Riverside area on April 22. The mare was safely transported to the Banning Animal Shelter on that day, and shelter personnel soon discovered that the horse was pregnant.

Earlier today the foal was born.

"It appears to be a paint horse and in good health," said Riverside County Chief Veterinarian Dr. Allan Drusys. "In 25 years of equine practice, I've seen many flashy foals -- and this colt ranks near the top in appearance and personality."

Dr. Drusys said the mare is also in fine health and protective of her newborn.

The media is invited to the Banning Animal Shelter, 2240 E. Charles St., Banning, 92220.

Dr. Drusys is available for on-camera and print interviews. Public Information Chief John Welsh is also present and can transmit photographs and video to media outlets unable to visit the shelter.

The mare and the foal will soon be available for adoption. More information about the adoption process will be released in the near future.
