Summer School Students to Learn About Mosquito Control
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District is reaching out to students and their teachers this summer with field trips to Skeeter H.Q. in Indio, to learn about mosquitoes and other vectors.
Beginning Monday, July 14, approximately 800 third and fourth graders from six elementary schools in the Coachella Valley Unified School District will tour the District campus. The tours are part of the School District's "Camp Bug-a-Boo" summer field trip program.
The goal is to increase an awareness of mosquitoes, their breeding sources, and integrated pest management techniques that will help keep the District's residents safe from vector-borne diseases.
Students will attend a 40-minute presentation given by the District's Community Educators. The presentation focuses on vectors, their biology and habitats, and the diseases they transmit. The students will also learn the various methods used to help control vector populations. In addition, there will be hands-on exhibits for the students, such as microscopes so students can view mosquito eggs, larvae, and pupae. After the presentation, students will tour the District’s facilities, where they will see a collection of unusual insects from around the Coachella Valley and the world, including live scorpions and lizards.
The media is invited to attend these classes for photo and interview opportunities. For more information, contact the District at 342-8287, or visit the website at www.cvmvcd.org.
