Second Annual 'Celebrate Healthy Families' Event Planned

The Second Annual “Celebrate Healthy Families” to prevent child abuse and to celebrate recovery from addiction will be held Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Palm Desert Community Park.

“This day is dedicated to recovery and healing,” said chair Jim Powell, of the Riverside County Mental Health Department, which is sponsoring the event along with the Betty Ford Center, Ranch Recovery Center, and Prevent Child Abuse - Riverside County.

“We encourage everyone in the Coachella Valley to join us on a positive day to celebrate recovery from alcohol and other drugs and healing from the pain of child abuse,” he said. “When a person is using substances, children in the home are neglected and often placed in harm’s way.”

All families and the public are invited to come to the one-day event from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Activities start with a 5k run, a 2K family walk followed by children’s activities and entertainment for people of all ages. There are also resource booths with information on health, substance abuse and child abuse. Jeanne and Karl Anthony will provide music entertainment.

Runners and walkers can register now for $15 for individuals and $20 for families. Children under 16 are free. Register online today at www.celebratehealthyfamilies.com Registration is available on the day of the event for $20 for individuals and $25 for families.

Proceeds will benefit Christopher’s Clubhouse in La Quinta, a non-profit organization dedicated to teach children how to be safe from predators, bullies and abductions; and SafeHouse of the Desert, a shelter for runaway teenagers in Thousand Palms.

There will be t-shirts and badges for all walkers and runners and free food for all attendees, according to Powell.
