Rivco Gives New Meaning to 'Dog Days of August'
The dog days of summer are a great time to consider pet ownership, whether you’re of the dog or feline persuasion.
Back in July, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors designated August 9th through the 16th as Homeless Animals Awareness Week, and the Animal Services Department is continuing in the spirit by extending special programs through the end of August.
Tens of thousands of animals enter Riverside County shelters each year. Riverside County Animal Services’ employees encourage potential adopters to consider their shelters in Thousand Palms, Blythe, Banning and Riverside as the adoption option.
Right now Riverside County Animal Services is caring for more than 500 animals that are in need of a lifetime home. In addition to those animals, another 400 or so animals are strays whose owners may not come to claim their lost pet or may never be contacted because the stray does not include identification or microchip information.
Animal Services Director Robert Miller is extending the department’s “Freedom Campaign” until the end of August. The Freedom Campaign started just before the Fourth of July with a special $40 adoption fee for all animals.
In addition to that offer, Animal Services is also extending its “2-fur-1” cats-and-kittens adoption special. Adopters can choose a second cat or kitten for free with their $40 adoption through August.
