North Shore Coastal Cleanup Day November 8, 2008
North Shore --- The beaches in the North Shore Yacht Club harbor will be the site for a cleanup on November 8th, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The event is sponsored jointly by the East Valley Historical Society and The Desert Alliance for Community Empowerment in cooperation with the California Coastal Commission’s 2008 Coastal Cleanup Day. Additional volunteers are being sought to participate.

SunLine Transit Agency Featured in ‘Metro Magazine’
The SunLine Transit Agency has been listed as one of the Top Ten Transit Systems to work for, according to Metro Magazine, an industry publication with circulation throughout the United States.
Environmentally aware teens participated in a “Clean Money Fundraising Opportunity” last Saturday in Thousand Palms. Not only did they help beautify the community, they raised $2,000 for each of their four groups: the YMCA of the Desert, Desert Mirage High School Boys Varsity Soccer, Esperanza Youth and Family Center, and the Coachella Valley High School Gay and Straight Alliance. A total of 31 Fourth District non-profit youth organizations have applied, completely using up the entire $62,000 allocated for the project, sponsored by 4th District Supervisor Roy Wilson, Burrtec Industries, and the Departments of Code Enforcement and Environmental Health.

Mosquito District to Treat For Adult Mosquitoes
West Nile virus has been detected in adult mosquitoes prompting the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District to fog by trucks due to the immediate risk of disease transmission to people. Fogging will commence on Sunday, October 5, between 6am and 7am, weather permitting, and will continue for three consecutive days. The area affected includes the Mesquite sewer treatment facility on Vella Road and vicinity. At this time there are no test positives for WNv in sentinel chickens or humans within the areas.
Family YMCA 'Cleans Up' With Riverside County Saturday
Twenty environmentally-conscious YMCA teens, ages 15 through 17 years old, will be participating in a "Clean Money Fundraising Opportunity" this weekend, on Saturday, Oct. 4. The kids, along with two YMCA staff supervisors, will meet at a designated location in Thousand Palms, and they will receive their marching orders from coordinators with regard to specific areas in need of tidying up. Clean up will take place for four hours, from 7 - 11 a.m.

Wildlife Habitat Plan Receives Final Okay
The Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) announced today that after more than a decade of planning, the historic Coachella Valley Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan (CVMSHCP) received final approval from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) had previously signed the permit for the CVMSHCP on Sept. 9. The approval from state and federal wildlife agencies is the final step in this valley-wide plan which balances future development and protection of our environment for the next 75 years.
