Diabetes Open House Targets Latinos in Eastern Coachella Valley

Families that struggle with diabetes are invited to an open house on Oct. 27 in Indio to learn how to stay healthy.

The open house at the Indio Family Care Center is an introduction to Programa Dulce del Valle, a diabetes management project operated by Riverside County’s Department of Public Health. The open house will feature diet and exercise information to help patients keep their diabetes under control.

With almost 13,000 Latino adults diagnosed with diabetes in eastern Riverside County, the program provides important resources that help residents take charge of their own health, said program coordinator Debra Suess. All of the information is culturally-sensitive and bilingual to help Latino families learn how to cook healthier versions of their favorite foods and easy ways to stay active.

The open house is an opportunity for eligible patients to enroll in Programa Dulce, which offers case-management services through a team of medical providers, nurses, dieticians and community health promoters. Through this comprehensive approach, Programa Dulce patients learn everything from proper foot care to tracking blood sugar levels.

The Indio Family Care Center is located on 47-923 Oasis St. in Indio. The open house begins at 10 a.m. Food, prizes and activities will be provided. Programa Dulce is funded through a grant from Inland Empire Health Plan and managed in collaboration with Borrego Springs Health Foundation. For more information about the open house or Programa Dulce, please call the Indio Family Care Center at 863-8283.
