North Shore Coastal Cleanup Day November 8, 2008
North Shore --- The beaches in the North Shore Yacht Club harbor will be the site for a cleanup on November 8th, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The event is sponsored jointly by the East Valley Historical Society and The Desert Alliance for Community Empowerment in cooperation with the California Coastal Commission’s 2008 Coastal Cleanup Day. Additional volunteers are being sought to participate.
There will be a joint rehydration ceremony at 12:30 PM following the Coastal Cleanup on both the North and West shore. This is a symbolic gesture to bring attention to the need for preservation of the Salton Sea. Participants are asked to bring a gallon of water with them to the event that can be poured into the harbor during the ceremony.
The adaptive re-use of the North Shore Yacht Club will eventually provide a new Community Center in addition to housing a visitor center and passive museum. The Coastal Cleanup at the beautiful North Shore Yacht Club harbor will serve as a perfect opportunity to get a head start on the exciting renovation project.
Most of the California Coastal Commission cleanup events took place on September 20th, however due to our summer heat, the two desert events are being held in November for the comfort and safety of the volunteers.
“California Coastal Cleanup Day is the state’s premier volunteer event,” said Eben Schwartz, Outreach Manager for the California Coastal Commission. “Since the first Cleanup in 1985, more than 800,000 of us have taken part in this effort, which has helped the Cleanup become the state’s best opportunity to educate its citizens about the health of our coast and ocean. Coastal Cleanup Day teaches all Californians that our everyday actions have broad implications for the well-being of our oceans and the habitat and wildlife that depend on them.”
California Coastal Cleanup Day 2008 is supported by the California Coastal Commission, California State Parks Foundation, and the Ocean Conservancy. This event is made possible by the hard work of hundreds of local non-profits and government agencies throughout the state and tens of thousands of volunteers annually.
Garbage bags, T-shirts and work gloves will be given to volunteers who help clean up public areas within the community. A community BBQ will be provided by Supervisor Roy Wilson for volunteers.
