Ribbon cutting ceremonies took place this morning (Jan. 28) at the new expanded park facilities in the community of Thousand Palms. On hand for the festivities were (top photo, from left): Deanna Lorson, Managing Director of the County’s Economic Development Agency which led the effort on the project; Patricia Saleh, Thousand Palms Community Council member; Fourth District Supervisor Roy Wilson; Greg Pinney, Thousand Palms Council member; Laura McGalliard, District 5 director for the Coachella Valley Parks and Recreation District; Roy Nokes, Thousand Palms Council Chairman; and Colby Cataldi, director of Desert Operations for EDA.

Here’s a view of the new shade structures and playground equipment at the park, which will now be operated by the Coachella Valley Recreation and Parks District. Seconds after this photo was snapped, a throng of local kids christened the new equipment. Also present for this morning’s ceremony were Debra Beck, representing state Senator John Benoit, and Eduardo Garcia, representing Assemblyman Manuel Perez.

How do YOU spell fun? How about an orange six-seater, powered by a green energy source, decorated by balloons and other stuff, careening down a grassy slope toward a new park playground and later maybe a little picnic? Now if we only had some Green Eggs and Ham!

The County of Riverside’s Economic Development Agency recently saw completion of the $1.6 million paving project on the County Fair/National Date Festival Fairgrounds. Because of fierce competition for construction jobs, EDA was able to complete the job in much more durable concrete, rather than asphalt—and they did it in plenty of time for this year’s Fair & Fest, which gets under way February 13 and runs through the 22nd. Pictured here is the pavement work, which enhanced the recent annual Family Motor Coach of America event. This year’s FMCA event drew approximately 1,400 motorhomes to the fairgrounds.
