Three Wise Men in the Community of Mecca Tonight
A long-standing tradition continues in Mecca with the annual “Dia de los Reyes Magos” celebration.
The Riverside County Fire Department (CalFire), Univision TV (KVER TV) Mecca Catholic Church and Target have joined together in collecting donations of toys and clothing for the needy families of the Eastern Coachella Valley.
Univision reporter/anchor Hernan Quintas and Jovanny Quintana, along with Father Eliseo Lucas and Fire Captain Fernando Herrera, asked the public to donate toys and clothing for this event. The response was very successful. To date, more than 250 toys, over 200 pair of shoes and miscellaneous clothing have been donated… along with 100 pairs of shoes which were contributed last night by Target.
This event started as just a simple idea to reach out to those families that did not receive some Christmas Magic through Rivco Fire’s “Spark of Love “Christmas program; it has turned into a huge annual event made possible by the generous donations of both private businesses and the public here in the Coachella Valley.
The event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Mecca Catholic Church. A Fiesta will take place, during which families who have been selected will be moved to the tent area in the church parking lot were they will receive their gifts. Univision, along with other desert media, will be present to interview the families. Riverside County Fire Department station 40 and Volunteer Company 40 will be at the event to help distribute gifts and show community support.
