8,500 Cyclists Expected for 11th Annual Tour de Palm Springs

Thousands of cyclists are expected to zoom through the Resort City this weekend during the 11th Annual Tour de Palm Springs – a popular 100-mile bike ride that starts in downtown Palm Springs and winds through the entire Coachella Valley.

The festivities will kick off Friday at noon with registration and a bicycle expo at the Palm Springs Convention Center, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros, followed by a 5 p.m. pasta dinner and silent auction.

The 100-mile Tour de Palm Springs gets under way on Saturday,  at 7 a.m. from the starting point at Palm Canyon Drive from Baristo to Ramon Road. Cyclists can also sign up for shorter rides. Palm Canyon Drive from Arenas to Baristo will be closed from 3 a.m. till 10 a.m. -- and from Baristo to Ramon from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information and registration fees, visit www.tourdepalmsprings.comor call 770-4626.

Following the ride at 5 p.m., check out the Tour de Jazz, an outdoor concert located in front of the Desert Fashion Plaza – featuring a host of popular local jazz musicians.
