‘Multi-Service Center’ Roll Out Set for Thursday in P.S

County Supervisors Roy Wilson and Marion Ashley will join Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet and the Palm Springs City Council tomorrow (Thursday) for the historic “roll out” of the first homeless shelter in the Western Coachella Valley.

Members of the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) Homelessness Committee and a host of other elected and county officials will be on hand to celebrate the official christening of the new “Western Coachella Valley Multi-Service Center” at 10a.m.at 19531 McLane Street in North Palm Springs.

The county-owned building, a large commercial warehouse-type structure just off I-10, is temporarily serving as an overnight cold weather shelter. It will soon be converted into a multi-service shelter, the first phase of which is slated to open sometime in mid-April.

Immediately following the event, the City of Palm Springs will host CVAG’s Homelessness Committee meeting around 11 a.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way.

The first phase of this new multi-service facility will feature a 25-bed safe haven shelter for chronically homeless individuals as well as a mental health clinic. The second phase will include120 emergency shelter beds for homeless individuals and families, a dining area where clients will be served three meals per day, and an Access Center where homeless and near homeless clients can access a variety of social services -- serving as a “one-stop shop.” This second phase is slated for completion by Dec. 1.

“Clearly, there has been a lack of services in the western Coachella Valley, since historically they have only been provided in the Indio area,” said Fourth District Supervisor Roy Wilson. “ This facility was identified in the strategic plan adopted by the Homelessness Committee of CVAG as crucial to the needs of the community at large.”

The public is invited to the ceremony. To get to the facility, take the Indian Canyon Drive exit off of I-10, head north, and then turn left on 19th Street and left again on McLane. You can’t miss the big facility nearest the freeway.
