Services for Late Mayor Frank Bogert Set for Friday

Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet will be the opening speaker at the late former Mayor Frank Bogert’s memorial service on Friday, March 27 in Palm Springs. The 2 p.m. public service will be held at Temple Isaiah, 322 W. Alejo Road. The public is invited to attend. A private service for the family will be held following the memorial.

Quakes Along Southern San Andreas Prompt Study, Concern

While there have been no reports of damage or injuries associated with the 4.8 magnitude quake that occurred near Bombay Beach early this morning, the U.S. Geological Survey has been tracking an unusual sequence of small earthquakes (50+) that have been clustered in the area. The majority of these quakes, just south of Bombay Beach, have been less than 2.5 in magnitude.

Senator Feinstein Announces Plans to Introduce Measure for New Desert Monument

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the author of the 1994 California Desert Protection Act, has announced her intention to introduce new legislation to establish a national monument to preserve hundreds of thousands of acres in the Mojave Desert. The former Catellus lands were previously donated to or by purchased by the Department of the Interior for conservation.

YMCA HOLDS HAIR CUT-A-THON TO RAISE FUNDS

The Family YMCA of the Desert will partner with Sharon of Benjamin’s on El Paseo to hold a “hair cut-a-thon” from 9:00am – 3:00pm on Tuesday, March 24 to raise funds for the YMCA’s annual campaign. Haircuts will only be $15 per person, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Family YMCA. Those wishing to update their “do” may drop in (no appointment required) and are asked to arrive with clean, dry hair.

Board of Supes Approves Neighborhood Relief Program

The Rivco Board of Supervisors today allocated $9,700,000 in federal funding to implement the Neighborhood Stabilization Homeownership Program (NSHP) today. This funding comes out of a $44 million dollar grant for Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP). The key is the “H” in the NSHP, which emphasizes “homeownership,” as opposed to the umbrella NSP program administered by the Economic Development Agency.

Supervisors Give Green Light to East Valley Mobile Home Park

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors has authorized “fast track” status to a proposed 61-acre, 398-unit mobile home park in the East Valley. The project would bring much needed affordable housing to the region, and is seen as a possible partial solution to the Desert Mobile Home Park problem.
