Don’t Waste that Citrus—Hidden Harvest Can Use It
Palm Springs residents and landscapers can bring their unwanted citrus to collection carts in the City – and the fruit will be given to the needy instead of going to waste.
City officials have teamed up with Hidden Harvest, a local produce recovery program, to provide space at the City Corporate Yard for citrus collection carts supplied by Palm Springs Disposal Services. Anyone who has extra citrus can place it in carts and Hidden Harvest will collect and distribute it to those in need.
The organization provides produce to 65 agencies in the Coachella Valley – including nonprofits on the western end of the valley like the Desert AIDS Project and Well in the Desert, according to Executive Director Christy Porter.
“The fruit will be delivered directly to people in Palm Springs,” Porter said. “There’s a real need in the western end of the valley.”
Residents can drop off their unwanted citrus anytime in the carts located in the parking lot of the City Yard, 425 N. Civic Drive. Drivers should take Alejo Road east of Farrell Drive and turn south off Alejo onto Civic. Landscapers are encouraged to bring their citrus to the collection carts instead of taking it to the landfill.
At this time, only citrus is being collected and the bins will be in place until sometime in April when the season is over.
