Classic Play ‘Blood Wedding’ Opens Tonight at COD

College of the Desert is presenting the West Coast premiere of a new American translation of Federico Garcia Lorca’s classic, Blood Wedding, opening tonight. There will be four performances through Sunday at the Pollock Theatre on campus. Evening performances are tonight and Saturday at 7 p.m. and matinees are Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets for the COD Performing Arts Production are $12, or $10 for students and senior citizens.

Blood Wedding features an excellent cast of student actors and also features COD Ballet Folklorico group as dancers at a wedding. Live musical accompaniment is provided. Director David Catanzarite gets great performances from the talented cast. Diamond Braverman's simple set is unique and effective. The costumes add a colorful note to the production.

Blood Wedding was written by Lorca, the Spanish literary great. The COD production offers a brilliant new translation and adaptation by Caradid Svich. Svich is an award-winning -playwright, translator and editor - known for her linguistic and visual mixing of Latino and American cultures. As in many of Lorca’s plays, symbolism and surrealism in Blood Wedding are important; the Moon and Death are personified as characters in the stage tragedy.

The play is directed by David Catanzarite, Assistant Professor, Theater Arts at COD.  He has directed and performed professionally on both coasts and presently serves as resident director for the Watts Village Theater Company in Los Angeles. Other directing credits include the John Anson Ford Theatre, Shakespeare Festival/LA, the Mark Taper Forum, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, and Stella Adler Theatre.

This is his first year at College of the Desert and his acclaimed version of Our Town last fall was his first production here.
