Riverside County Grand Jury Application Deadline Extended

The deadline to apply to become a member of the Riverside County Grand Jury has been extended to April 30 in order to give more time to desert residents to send or fax in their application.

The deadline was extended because of a low number of applications from four of the five supervisorial districts in Riverside County – particularly from the “desert district.”

“We don’t have any applications from District 4,” said Grand Jury Secretary Gail Soursais. “We really want members that represent every district, so we’ve extended the deadline in hopes we’ll get more people from the desert.”

An application can be downloaded on the Superior Court website: www.riverside.courts.ca.gov  .  It must be mailed in a self-addressed, stamped business size envelope to the Grand Jury Secretary at P.O. Box 829, Riverside, CA, 92502 or faxed to (951) 955-8999.

Grand Jury members must be:

  • United States citizens
  • 18 years or older
  • Residents of Riverside County
  • In good health and mobile
  • Able to speak and understand English
  • Able to attend hearings/meetings 3-5 days each week for a full year

Grand Jury members cannot be:

  • Serving as a trial juror in any court in California
  • Discharged as a grand juror within the previous year
  • An elected public official
  • A person who has been convicted of a malfeasance or any felony or high crime

The term of office is one year, from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010.

Duties include investigating operations of county government, inquiring into matters of civic concern as well as inquiry into public offenses.

A small per diem of $15 to $25 per day, plus mileage is paid to defray expenses.
