Desert Pair to compete in the All American Soap Box Derby
A fundraising event that will honor the many years of volunteer service of Lucia Moran to the La
Quintal soap box derby, as well as a send-off celebration for local competition winners as they
embark on their journey to the All American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio next week.
On July 15 at 6 p.m., the Soap Box Derby of the Desert will host a fundraising event at Red
Robin Restaurant in La Quinta as a celebration send off to the two local winners, Geena Waters and
Kyndall Russell. During the event, volunteers and racers from past events (dating back 15
years) will honor former race director, Lucia Moran, for her years of dedication. Lucia
passed the torch of our local Derby over to Desert Recreation District in 2009, but her years of
service will not go unrecognized. Everyone involved in the local race, as well as prospective
new competitors and their families, are invited to participate in the Wednesday evening event.
”Join us on July 15
th at Red Robin and hear the many stories of how Lucia has enriched the lives of so many
Soap Box participants and volunteers,” said Tatiana Hinkle, the new race director. “Lucia put her
heart and soul into our local race and we want people to have an opportunity to share their stories
and thank her for her many years of inspiration.
“We are currently looking forward to our 2010 Derby, which will be held on March 27, 2010, and are beginning to look for car sponsors (that help purchase car kits for families that are unable to afford this on their own), children who would like to race, and volunteers interested in helping at the construction clinics or on the day of the race.”
Anyone interested in participating should contact Desert Recreation District at 347-3484. The 2010 race will include the addition of two rally races and a Masters Division.
The local Soap Box Derby is a community event that is an official activity of the Desert Recreation District in partnership with the City of La Quinta.
