The County of Riverside and the City of Palm Springs christened the new Household Hazardous Waste facility on Vella Road across from Demuth Park. The new facility will handle additional hazardous materials, beyond what was accepted at the old “ABOP” facility north of city hall (see story for details). In upper photo, Joe McCann, Assistant Chief Engineer for the county’s Waste Management Department, explains the benefits of the new facility while city council members (from left) Ginny Foat, Chris Mills and Lee Weigel look on. In lower photo, Mayor Steve Pougnet wields the ceremonial scissors while council woman Foat tries to keep her fingers from being victimized. In the background, just to the left of the mayor is City Manager David Ready, while city Sustainability Manager Michele Mician stands between mayor and councilwoman. In the back can be seen Councilman Mills (slightly taller than mountains in the background), Councilman Weigel, and, to the right of Ginny Foat, Debra Beck, representing State Senator John Benoit. On the extreme right is Jacqueline Lopez, field representative for Assemblyman Manuel Perez. Lynda Gregory of Supervisor Wilson’s office was also on hand for the festivities.
