Grant Funding Available in Riverside County for DoD Research

With the Riverside County jobless rate in the stratosphere, the County of Riverside Office of Foreign Trade is reporting some good news for a change: Up to $850,000 is available for research and development programs for the Department of Defense (DoD).

Riverside County EDA Chases Federal Energy Efficiency Funding

The Riverside County Economic Development Agency will pursue a $6.5 million dollar grant for Energy Efficiency and Conversion with the U.S. Department of Energy, having been the first county in the nation to be awarded $50,000 to underwrite the filing of the grant application.

Auditions Set for COD Fall Production, 'Inherit The Wind'

The College of the Desert Performing Arts Department announces auditions for its Fall 2009 production of Inherit The Wind at Theater Too on the Palm Desert campus. The production will be directed by Guillermo Aviles-Rodriguez, Artistic Director of the Watts Village Theater Company, and a new adjunct instructor of theater at COD.

Construction is well under way on the new Thermal Sheriff Station/Aviation Center, as shown in this picture, taken Wednesday, August 19. The $42 million dollar facility on Airport Boulevard is expected to be complete by late 2010, more strategically located and efficient than the outdated and overcrowded station in Indio.

Coachella, Thermal Area to Get Healthier, Thanks to Major Initiative

Good news for the communities of Coachella and Thermal. The California Endowment, one of the most influential and prominent foundations in the nation, has chosen the Coachella/Thermal area as one of 14 regions statewide to receive grant funding under the “Building Healthy Communities Initiative.”

Rivco OTC Races for Train Car Biz and Electric Auto Plant

Riverside County team members met with Korean business officials in the City of Sacramento last week to discuss the opportunity for Riverside County to be a manufacturing and logistical base for a Bullet Train proposed to be built between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The meeting, held in the historic Governors office of the Leland Stanford mansion, matched Korean business leaders and rail experts with cabinet secretaries from state agencies and the Riverside County Office of Foreign Trade.

The new Palm Desert Sheriff's station is rising out of the sand dunes on the south side of Gerald Ford Drive, between Monterey and Portola in Palm Desert. When completed, the $30 million facility will relieve severe overcrowding at the existing sheriff's station adjacent to Palm Desert City Hall.

Rancho Mirage Library Presents Songs of the Silver Screen

Tom Hiatt and the Sundown riders will perform cowboy classics including Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Ghost Riders in the Sky and Back in the Saddle Again in an evening filled with olde time western cowboy nostalgia. In addition, stills from old movie and TV westerns featuring silver screen cowboys such as Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Rex Allen will be accompanied by songs sung by the Sundown Riders.

The new Sheriff's Station in Thermal is "going vertical." The $40 million facility off Airport Boulevard near Jacqueline Cochran Airport is scheduled to receive its official christening next summer. The current economic situation should not impact either this facility or the $30 million Palm Desert station being built on Gerald Ford Drive

The County of Riverside and the City of Palm Springs christened the new Household Hazardous Waste facility on Vella Road across from Demuth Park. The new facility will handle additional hazardous materials, beyond what was accepted at the old “ABOP” facility north of city hall (see story for details). In upper photo, Joe McCann, Assistant Chief Engineer for the county’s Waste Management Department, explains the benefits of the new facility while city council members (from left) Ginny Foat, Chris Mills and Lee Weigel look on. In lower photo, Mayor Steve Pougnet wields the ceremonial scissors while council woman Foat tries to keep her fingers from being victimized. County, City Cooperation Launches Waste Facility in Palm Springs

The City of Palm Springs and the County of Riverside officially took the wraps off the new Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility in the Resort City today.
