COD Posts List of Open Classes on Web

Courses are filling up fast at College of the Desert but some classes still have empty seats. A list of those classes has been posted on the COD website for the convenience of students who haven’t yet registered for the fall semester.

The website is at www.collegeofthedesert.edu.

With the number of classes limited due to budget constraints and soaring enrollments because of admissions caps and higher tuition fees at state universities, more high school freshmen are opting to start at community colleges this year. The high demand has produced a 17.5 percent increase in enrollments over last fall, with only days left before classes begin Aug. 31.

However, classes are still available at COD including some popular courses such as chemistry, computer science, culinary arts, digital design and production, geology, geography, French, Spanish, music, physics, political science and physical education.

These limited offerings may not be available at high-demand times, such as mornings, but there are opportunities if students act quickly.

COD has cut 50 classes from the 1,000 classes offered for the fall semester, and plans to cut 120 from the spring semester in 2010. There will be no intersession offered in January and the college plans to eliminate summer sessions in 2010, with a few necessary exceptions.  The cuts are the result of a California budget crisis that resulted in the state cutting almost one billion dollars from the community college system’s budget. The cost to College of the Desert is approximately $4.5 million.
