Coachella, Thermal Area to Get Healthier, Thanks to Major Initiative

Coachella, Thermal Area to Get Healthier, Thanks to Major Initiative

Good news for the communities of Coachella and Thermal.

The California Endowment, one of the most influential and prominent foundations in the nation, has chosen the Coachella/Thermal area as one of 14 regions statewide to receive grant funding under the “Building Healthy Communities Initiative.”

A local collaborative is tasked with composing and implementing a strategic plan, which focuses on the health and welfare of residents in these two communities.  The local “ Building Healthy Communities Collaborative” will present this plan to the California Endowment in order to qualify for long-term grants under this program.

And what, exactly, is a “healthy community”?  Well, that, in part, will be described by participants in this program.  It might be safer walking/bicycling routes to school, low crime, after-school activities, good-paying jobs.

Residents of the area are invited to two free community “welcoming” events to learn more about the initiative and to sign on to participate.

More good news: food, music, fun is a part of the program.

The first welcoming event will take place on August 27 at 5 p.m. at Bobby Duke Middle School located at 85-358 Bagdad Avenue, Coachella.

The second welcoming event will occur on September 10 at 5 p.m. at John Kelley Elementary School, 87-163 Center Street, Thermal.

Members from the aforementioned communities are highly encouraged to attend. Local elected officials and other community leaders will be on hand to support this important endeavor.

The BHCC invites all who are interested in the future health of Coachella and Thermal to attend these two important welcoming events as their input and participation is vital to developing the ten year strategic plan.
