Entering the Shelter as a Homeless Pet Can Be Frightening

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a homeless pet taken “into custody” at the local animal shelter?

Well, all your four-legged neighbors are barking and barking and, there you are, the new guy or gal.

That’s where the County Animal Services staff at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus and the Blythe shelter come in: They do their best to make the newcomers feel comforted.

Kathleen “Cookie” Briney is one of the dedicated volunteers at the Coachella Valley facility.

“He’s just a little nervous,” she said, as she held and chatted with the pup recently at the beginning of his stay at the facility in Thousand Palms.

Cookie, by the way, has also come to rely on the other wonderful volunteers who give of their time to walk dogs and to socialize new cats and kittens.

“It’s all part of making the animals feel better and increasing their chances for adoption,” she said.

NOTE TO POTENTIAL ADOPTERS: The little doggie in Cookie's arms is a cream/white 3-month-old male terrier mix. He’s currently known as A737654, the official number given to him at the shelter.

He can hardly wait for his unique new name. Will you be the one to give it to him? For more information on A737654, or lots of other great adoptable pets, call the Shelter at 343-3644.

How does “Spot” sound?
