Fourth District Youth Advisory Council Selects Slate of Officers
The growing ranks of the Fourth District Youth Advisory Council have selected a slate of officers to guide them in the 09/10 school year.
The Youth Advisory Council, which provides advice to the Fourth District Supervisor primarily on matters concerning, well, youth, is comprised of students from high schools throughout the Fourth District’s sprawling desert district.
“Our attendance is way up this year,” says Noel Loughrin, Youth Advisory Council Coordinator. “Some of that is through the increased participation of Palo Verde Valley students. In fact, nearly half of our members are from the Blythe area this year.”
The Fourth District stretches from Palm Springs to the Arizona border, and each year the high school students band together to form the 4 th District Youth Advisory Council. The YAC then elects a slate of five officers, one of whom represents the Fourth District on the countywide Youth Commission. There are also two alternates Commission reps.
This year’s Fourth District officers in the Coachella Valley include: Commissioner Brandi Lucrecio, La Quinta High School; Co-Commissioner Jonny Rohrbaugh, Palm Desert High School; Youth Summit Representative Briana Jakell, La Quinta High School; Parliamentarian Raine Armstrong, Palm Desert High School, and Secretary Cassandra Santamaria, La Quinta High School.
The officers from Palo Verde High School are: Commissioner Dylan Walsh, Co-Commissioner Marysol Perez-Peralta, Secretary Brittany Navarro, Parliamentarian Adam Kehl, and Youth Summit Representative Monica Bullock.
“I’m extremely pleased that membership is up this year,” says Loughrin. “And we expect our numbers to grow even more.”
Each year, the Youth Advisory Council takes on a variety of community projects, this year they will be focusing on service projects that educate teens in making responsible decisions. Providing assistance for SafeHouse of the Desert is another project YAC will concentrate on, as is offering services for after school programs.
