Blythe Landfill to be Open One Saturday Per Month

In an effort to improve efficiency at the County Sanitary Landfill, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors has approved a plan which would reduce Saturday services. Beginning January 2, the Landfill will only be open on the first Saturday of each month. Previously, the dump was open every Saturday.

Weekday services (Monday through Friday) will not be impacted by this change.

In support of its recommendation, the County’s Waste Management Department noted that average Saturday collections amounted to less than 9 tons per day, while only 13 customers, on average, utilized the services. On weekdays, the landfill averages 22 customers and 59 tons of trash.

The efficiency problem with remaining open every Saturday is that the three employees and their heavy equipment must be on duty and paid for. Also, the Department conducted surveys which indicated that most Saturday landfill users would be satisfied with one Saturday per month.

If a holiday falls on the first Saturday, then the landfill will be closed, and the next Saturday operation will be scheduled for the following month.

The change is expected to save $80,000 annually.
