Supervisor Benoit Announces Line-Up Of Scam Stopper Community Events
PALM DESERT – Building on the success of similar recent events in Thousand Palms and Palm Desert, Riverside County Supervisor John J. Benoit will continue his series of Scam Stopper Seminars throughout the Fourth District. Each will feature presentations on identity theft prevention, senior scams, elder abuse, consumer fraud, and county services for victims of elder abuse from partnering agencies – such as the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Riverside County Curtailing Abuse Related to the Elderly (C.A.R.E.) Program, and the California Department of Consumer Affairs.
"I’m pleased to continue my career-long involvement in curbing elder abuse, identity theft, and fraud,” said Fourth District Supervisor John J. Benoit. “Through the preventive measures advocated in these popular events, we can make it tough for criminals to work in the neighborhoods of the Coachella Valley."
The next scam stopper seminars will take place:
- Friday, March 19 at the Golden Rainbow Senior Center in Palm Springs (700 East Tahquitz Canyon Way), from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM
- Wednesday, March 31 at the Indio Senior Center (45-700 Aladdin Street) from 11:30 AM-1:00 PM

- Friday, May 7 at Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs (480 South Sunrise Way) from 9:30-11:00 AM
In addition, Supervisor Benoit will host an advanced directives seminar to help residents with living wills, ensuring that their wishes are fulfilled in the event that they are no longer able to make health care decisions for themselves.
- Tuesday, March 9 at the Tierra Del Sol Community Center in Cathedral City (37-171 West Buddy Rogers Avenue), 9:30-11:00 AM
A complimentary lunch will be served following each presentation.
In the Legislature, Benoit authored legislation (AB 1158, 2008) that allowed seniors who cannot otherwise appear in court to testify via teleconference, and to enhance the licensing inspections and enforcement of senior nursing facilities (AB 978, 2008). Benoit also introduced a measure (AB 484, 2005) increasing penalties for caretakers who are convicted for subsequent counts of theft, embezzlement, forgery, or fraud against an elderly adult.
Attendees are encouraged to RSVP through Supervisor Benoit’s Office at (760) 863-8211.
