Benoit Resolution Commemorates May 11 As Travel Rally Day
RIVERSIDE – Riverside County Supervisor John J. Benoit will present a measure at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, May 4 proclaiming May 11 as U.S. Travel Rally Day and the week of May 8-16, 2010 as Travel and Tourism Week. A representative from the Palm Springs Desert Resort Communities Convention & Visitors Authority will accept the resolution.
“Travel is the lifeblood of the Coachella Valley economy, our number one industry creating thousands of jobs and businesses that serve the millions of vacationers here,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “Travel Rally Day is a positive acknowledgement of tourism’s countless benefits to Riverside County.”
Beginning in 1984, Congress designated the week beginning on the second Saturday of May of each year as “National Travel and Tourism Week” to raise awareness of the value of travel to the welfare of the nation.
Travel and tourism is one of California’s largest industries, with $87.7 billion in direct travel expenditures by domestic and international travelers in 2009. The industry also represents one of California’s largest employers with 881,000 travel-generated jobs and $29.8 billion in travel-generated payroll. In 2008, travelers spent $6.1 billion in Riverside County destinations, supporting 69,040 jobs, accounting for combined earnings of $1.74 billion, and generating $351.6 million in tax receipts.
The Palm Springs Desert Resort Communities Convention & Visitors Authority is joining dozens of other communities across the U.S. in promoting the second annual Travel Rally Day. On Tuesday, May 11, they are inviting the public to attend a special “Travel Matters Rally” from 5-7:00 PM at The Show at Agua Caliente Resort Spa Casino in Rancho Mirage.
Event coordinators are asking every travel employee to show up in uniform and put a face to our local tourism industry. Hors d’ oeuvres will be served to all attendees and there will be drawings for various “Staycation Packages” throughout the event.
In the State Senate, Benoit authored SCR 45 (2009) recognizing last year’s first-ever Travel Rally Day.
