Benoit To Be Honored As Legislator of the Year Tuesday
INDIAN WELLS – Riverside County Supervisor John J. Benoit will be recognized as Legislator of the Year by the American Red Cross of Riverside County at their 93rd Annual Meeting and Recognition Event on Tuesday, June 22 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens (78-200 Miles Avenue). Benoit will be honored for his efforts in the California State Senate as the author of Senate Bill 39 (Good Samaritan Law), which was signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger in August 2009.
“I am honored to receive recognition for the bipartisan effort last year to protect Good Samaritans from lawsuits,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “Good Samaritans, including the Red Cross’s dedicated emergency service volunteer workers, should never again have to second-guess the consequences of helping.”
SB 39 was written in response to a December 2008 California Supreme Court decision that stripped traditional liability protections from non-medical “Good Samaritans” and such volunteers providing non-medical help. SB 39 provides legal immunity to emergency service workers who perform disaster services during a state of emergency. Many communities enlist the help of disaster service volunteer workers for emergency operations, such as fires, flash floods, and earthquakes that occur in and around our region.
Together with AB 83 (Assemblyman Mike Feuer), in which Benoit was a principal co-author, the legislation extended liability protections to any person providing help in good faith at the scene of an emergency.
