Benoit Appointed to South Coast Air Quality Management District Governing Board
RIVERSIDE – The Riverside County Board of Supervisors today appointed Supervisor John J. Benoit to the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s (SCAQMD) Governing Board.
The Governing Board’s 13 representatives draft regulations to control air pollution in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, which are home to 16.7 million people.
“I’m honored to be a part of SCAQMD’s Governing Board and committees,” Supervisor Benoit said. “Improving air quality in the Inland Empire and the desert region, while being careful to protect jobs from over-regulation, will be my focus.”
Supervisor Benoit replaces Supervisor Ashley, who served this past year after Supervisor Roy Wilson’s death. Wilson served on the Governing Board of SCAQMD from 1987 to 2009.
“Supervisor Benoit has the requisite experience and qualities to serve effectively as a board member for many years to come,” Board Chairman Marion Ashley said.
This appointment has been historically held by the Fourth District Supervisor to represent Eastern Riverside County while Western Riverside County is represented by an elected city official, currently Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge.
Benoit will also serve on SCAQMD’s Mobile Source and Technology Committees. Former Palm Desert Councilman Buford Crites will continue to serve as Riverside County’s alternate to SCAQMD.
