Meeting to Discuss Strange Odors in Mecca to be Held Feb. 16

MECCA – A community meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at Saul Martinez Elementary School (65-705 Johnson Street) with the Environmental Protection Agency, Riverside County Department of Environmental Health, the South Coast Air Quality Management District and local representatives to discuss the problem of strange odors reported recently at the Mecca campus.

An investigation is under way by the Environmental Protection Agency to evaluate several possible sources of the strong odor.  Several industrial recycling businesses operate on Cabazon tribal land, regulated by the EPA, and agricultural operations are in the nearby vicinity, regulated by SCAQMD and Riverside County.

The Environmental Protection Agency will work with the Cabazon tribe and SCAQMD to address complaints.  Residents are encouraged to call 1-800-CUT-SMOG (288-7664) to report strange smells detected.
