Benoit to Speak at Open House of Volunteers in Medicine
INDIO – Supervisor John J. Benoit will speak at the open house of the Coachella Valley Volunteers in Medicine at 2 p.m. Tuesday at its Indio clinic (81-880 Dr. Carreon Blvd. Ste. B-103).
“I commend the dedication to our community exhibited by the doctors, nurses and dentists at the Volunteers in Medicine,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “The county has formed a phenomenal partnership with these medical professionals to vastly improve the quality of life of these residents who work but cannot afford health insurance.”
Volunteers in Medicine is a volunteer-staffed clinic with services provided by retirees and active practitioners in the medical and administrative fields. The clinic offers women’s services, dental services and general medical services free of charge to uninsured patients who are ineligible for county, state or federal government programs.
Last summer, the Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of a .83-acre parcel in Indio (Avenue 48, west of Jackson Street) for a permanent location for the Volunteers in Medicine. Riverside County entered into a 20-year lease with the Volunteers in Medicine, with the county committing to construct the clinic and an agreement that the Volunteers in Medicine operate the facility.
The permanent site is expected to break ground around April, with an opening in the first quarter of 2012.
