Construction Begins at Thermal Interchange
THERMAL – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) began construction this week on a new $6.1 million interchange in Thermal at Airport Boulevard on State Route 86S.
“I am proud of the great public outreach to Thermal residents that shaped this project and will allow construction to be completed sooner,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “Building this interchange will improve safety and traffic flow through this eastern Coachella Valley corridor.”& amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; amp; lt; /p>
Over the 18-month construction period, the SR-86S Airport Boulevard Interchange will replace the grade-level crossing with a new bridge that carries Airport Boulevard traffic over the 86S. The three-lane project will construct a lane in each direction and a center lane marked for left-hand turns onto the expressway. Other features include traffic signal-controlled ramps, two eight-foot shoulders and a six-foot sidewalk from Desert Cactus Drive to Fillmore Street.
Caltrans presented a proposal to the Thermal Community Council in January to close Airport Boulevard to traffic for six months to save an overall estimated eleven months. The community agreed and, beginning April 18, Airport Boulevard will be closed and traffic will be detoured to other avenues across the 86S.
Directional closures of the 86S will be needed to erect and tear down false work and scaffolding through the course of the project. K-rail will be set to create a safe work zone for the construction workers and lanes on the 86S will be marked to direct traffic through the construction zone.
Caltrans urges motorists to observe all advisory signs and slow down as they drive through the project.
